Even better accuracy can be obtained by differential GPS
The range errors seen by the fixed station and the nearby mobile receiver will be almost equal, as the signal travels along almost the same path. The fixed station (at known surveyed position!) can transmit the range error from each S/V to the mobile.
The FAA’s WAAS does this with a network of ground stations and a geosynchronous satellite link.
